More than 800 kilometres of hiking routes at heights of 440 to 2,139 metres open up a unique landscape between the Saualpe to the north and the Karawanken to the south. Long-distance hikers meet up on the stage of the Way of St. James which runs between Neuhaus, St. Kanzian and Gallizien. The craggy limestone rocks of the Karawanken are an ideal area for climbing boots of all sizes to get busy: families value the Petzen hiking region and the magnificent Obir dripstone caves on the Unterschäffler Alpe (1,078 metres) and the 40,000 m² flower park by Lake Sonnegger See. Nature hikers can discover the nature reserves such as the Vellacher Kotschna and the Trögerner Klamm gorge.
Summiteers can tackle the two thousand metre peaks such as the Hochobir, the summits of the Petzen massif (Feistritzer Spitze, 2,113 metres; Kordeschkopf (Slovenia) 2,126 metres) or the peaks of the Steiner Alps on the Slovenian border.
